The currency used in Mozambique is the Metical. The exchange rate changes often, it is advisable to ask us for the current rate the day before leaving SA.
It is not advisable to exchange money with the runners at the border, firstly it is illegal and there are lots of police around and secondly their hands are quick and you will only realise you were short changed when they are long gone.
The exchange rate at many petrol pumps differs to the exchange rate in the shop at the same garage. This is a liberty taken by many petrol attendants. If you are paying in Rands, ask for the exchange rate before the pump nozzle is put in your car. Write it down when he tells you so there can be no arguing later. Some stations are aware of this problem and have put up notices informing the public of the current rate of exchange. The rate on these notices is not negotiable.
It is possible to draw cash from the ATMs in town with your SA Visa or Maestro bank cards. Rands are accepted almost everywhere. Please note that the R200 note is no longer accepted.
Dollars are also accepted in many places, except for the 10 Dollar note because of too many fake notes on the market.
Go to http://www.standardbank.co.mz for today's exchange rate.
